Residents have reported problems with cyclist riding on the pavement along Burley Road. There are many houses on Burley Road that open straight onto the pavement and on several occasions residents have had near collisions when exiting their property.
Cyclists: Please show consideration for the residents and avoid cycling on the pavement. Remember that pedestrians have priority and also note that:
Cycling on footways (a path at the side of a carriageway) is prohibited by Section 72 of the Highway Act 1835, amended by Section 85(1) of the Local Government Act 1888. This is punishable either by an instant fixed penalty notice (FPN) of £30 under Section 51 and Schedule 3 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 or you could be taken to court and fined up to £500.
Verbal abuse is not an appropriate response if a resident asks you not to ride on the pavement!
